What I realized from small-group education in a diverse environment
Misaki Sawada
(Enrolled in 2024)
Kanagawa Prefecture / Aoyama Gakuin Yokohama Eiwa High School
GLAP’s small-group education helps students improve their discussion skills. Through daily conversations with diverse students, I also came to deeply realize that addressing global challenges requires openness to different cultures and values, as well as the ability to view issues from multiple perspectives.

Globalism and Humanities
An introductory course in the Humanities. Students analyze various literary and cinematic works from around the world and learn about the underlying social issues. The course cultivates the ability to appreciate creative works from new perspectives, such as culture, history, and values.
Lunch at the Global Lounge
The Global Lounge is often used by GLAP students and international students. With people of various nationalities, we enjoyed lively conversations about different countries' food and other topics during lunch.

Do assignments at the library
I gathered information by reading books from the library and researching online to prepare presentations in class.
International Business
An introductory business course. Students form groups to analyze corporate challenges, devise solutions, and deliver presentations. This experience made me realize that to provide optimal proposals to clients, it is essential to continuously absorb knowledge and trends across various industries.
Part-time job (Tutor)
I taught English classes for high school students, mainly focusing on exam preparations like English proficiency tests. Occasionally, I shared stories about my life as a GLAP student, which captivated their interest.
Return home and do assignments
I worked on class assignments. When preparing for group presentations, I talked with the other members via phone or social media. Also, lately I've been doing stretches at home to combat my lack of exercise.

Circle and Club Activities
What clubs or circle activities are you involved in?
I'm not in any clubs, but since high school I've been interested in international cooperation. I volunteer with an NPO providing school meals in Malawi, Africa. As part of this work, I handle social media marketing for Malawi's fair trade coffee.

Must-Have Items for Campus Life
iPad-compatible Touch Pencil
In GLAP classes, a lot of materials are shared digitally, so an iPad-compatible Touch Pencil is incredibly useful. I use this pencil to highlight, draw lines, and add comments on materials downloaded to my iPad as PDFs. I especially recommend it for anyone wanting to manage information digitally and efficiently.
I also carefully selected it for its stylish design!

Enjoying Everyday Life While Broadening My Perspective with Diverse Friends
Derrick Ito
(Enrolled in 2025)
America, Guam/ John F. Kennedy High School
In GLAP’s small classes, I get to share ideas with friends from all kinds of different backgrounds, which really helps me broaden my perspective. In ELA classes, I’ve learned about art from so many angles and gained insights that I can even apply to my own work.

Tutorial 1
It's a mandatory class, but what's special is that it's done in a really small group—just up to five students. We get to discuss theories, philosophy, and even hypothetical questions, and what's cool is that disagreements are actually encouraged. That way, we can find new ways of thinking that we wouldn't really get in other classes. Plus, we end up getting really close with our teachers too.

English Discussion
Even as a native English speaker who lived in Guam for 17 years, this class really helped me learn how to speak in a way that actually reaches my audience. One big thing I picked up was how to ask specific questions clearly and fluently—something you can’t really get just from speaking on your own. The topics we cover are super interesting too!
Lunch!
I usually have lunch at the Global Lounge while catching up with my GLAP friends. Because we all come from such different backgrounds and identities, I really value the time I get to spend with them. Living in Guam for most of my life, I know my view of the world can be pretty narrow, but just being around friends like this really helps me broaden my perspective.

Culture and Fine Arts
It's one of the ELA classes where I learned a lot about how history, materials, culture, religion, regions, and people can all change the way art is understood and even marketed. Since I’m an artist myself, taking this class really felt like I was learning things I could directly apply to my own work. We also get exposed to so many famous artworks that sometimes it feels like I’m studying in a museum exhibition every week. It’s definitely a class that’s deepened my personal understanding of art.
Free time
I usually head to the Global Lounge to relax with my friends, or sometimes I recruit people to study with me at the library. When I’m not studying, I like exploring food spots around campus with my friends.

Dinner (or going back home)
Sometimes I’ll have dinner with friends, and other times I just head home to cook for myself. Since Ikebukuro has so many different food options from all kinds of cuisines, we often spend like 20 minutes just deciding where to go after finishing homework.

Circle and Club Activities
What clubs or circle activities are you involved in?
"I’m part of the pottery circle where I make bowls and plates! I’m not that good yet, but it’s super fun with friends and really relaxing when I’m by myself. Once a month we put our ceramics in the kiln and even stay overnight to watch it. We play board games, eat, talk, and then finish in the morning. It’s also a great chance for me to practice Japanese with students outside of GLAP.

Personal Book and Tutorial book
You never know when you have time to read so during train rides, class breaks, or if I have free time in general I’ll take out my book and read. I usually read class assigned books; however, if I finish them early, I'll switch to my personal books that I take with me everywhere.

Using the Thinking and Empathy I Gained in Humanities to Help Shape People’s Futures!
Masashi Kuwabara
(Enrolled in 2021)
Through a variety of learning experiences and encounters with different cultures, I was able to develop a broad perspective, deep analytical skills, the ability to express my thoughts clearly, and empathy to see things from others’ points of view. I hope to put these experiences to use and make a positive impact in society.

GLAP helps students develop the ability to express their opinions and think from multiple perspectives in small, all-English classes.
Lilika Fujii
(Enrolled in 2022)
At GLAP, the small class sizes and all-English environment give me plenty of opportunities to actively share my thoughts and exchange ideas with classmates who have different values. Especially through discussions and presentations, I’ve developed the ability to express my opinions with clear reasoning and to consider things from multiple angles while respecting others’ viewpoints.
