Life goes into phases. At the time senior high students reach their graduation day, the countdown starts for the next big phase in their lives; the phase of university education. Since the time the student gets enrolled into a university, the society’s expectations of him and her become much higher. He and she start the journey on the track of professionalism regarding skills, experiences, and knowledge.

At the university level, the student starts specialization in one field of knowledge. This field will be his and her focus for the coming four years. And after graduating from the university, he and she are supposed to know about their field better than others. At the same time, there is an opinion that students lack information on other fields than their own, because their four-year term at the university was spent on mainly deepening their knowledge in that only field. Those future leaders will be serving the society in the future, and they will be taking decisions that will affect their lives and the lives of the people around them, whether it was their company, their family, or even their country. However, if those future leaders are equipped with knowledge that covers a broad area of study, the process of their decision making in the future will be more enhanced. This is because they would be seeing the things differently, from various angles. Thus, their decisions would be more informed. The Global Liberal Arts Program (GLAP) provides the students with broader knowledge and access to other specialities.

Rikkyo University has newly launched this GLAP program, which aims at building the future informed leaders. The program has a number of features, having the student study compulsory subjects, in addition to having the freedom to choose from other elective courses. And the student will have the chance to focus on one of the three broad areas of study: humanities, citizenship, and business.

Business area at GLAP is my specialty. My background and long experience in the business environment in Japan and internationally, in addition to my study field allow me to help guide the students into the real world of business. My interest is always to connect what the student learns in class with the real world. By this, the student will already have experience of applying what he or she is studying to what they will face and see after starting their future career. This approach, I believe, is effective in assisting the students making the most out of their university knowledge, in addition to maximizing their future contribution to the community and country as a whole.

The Study Abroad the GLAP is another part of our pride. This opportunity of studying abroad for around one year helps much broaden the knowledge and experience of the students; and give them the chance to learn about other cultures while continuing their university education. By this, they will be able to know more about their own country and culture. GLAP students will come back home, to Rikkyo University, after having that one year abroad, so that can they will graduate and start contributing effectively to their society and their own future.

We welcome you to be part of our GLAP program and see you at Rikkyo University.
