GLAP Students

‘Diversity’ which is essential for society

After studying about a year in GLAP, I strongly felt ‘Diversity’ the most. What do you imagine when you hear the word “diversity”? Before entering here, I thought it was merely “the state which many people with different characters are co-existing”. However, I learned from GLAP that this word had a deeper meaning. Now I would define this word as “our attitude and mind toward a society where people with various values and personalities coex ist” rather than just regarding as an “environment”. Unlike other faculties, the majority of classes in GLAP are held in ‘active learning’ (which engage students as active participants in their learning during class time with their instructor) and there are a lot of opportunities to hear a wide variety of opinions from classmates. Through these environments, you can reflect your ideas with othe rs and sometimes integrate them which leads to the creation of a brand -new idea. I believe that nurturing the ability to think comprehensively is one of the important behaviors in today’s complex society.

Our Perspective

What I noticed after entering in GLAP was that I was narrow-minded. By doing discussions and presentations in the courses with classmates and senior students who have various backgrounds, I could listen to their diverse ideas. Since I witnessed them showing great opinions, which were beyond my imagination, I felt that my perspective and ideas were not “wide and flexible”. At first, I was only overwhelmed, but by spending a lot of time and helping each other, I began to approach a problem from various perspectives. Moreover, it was not just classmates and seniors who have supported me. In the ELA courses, not only the GLAP students but also some other students from different faculty and international students participate in a class. All the assignments and the knowledge that the professor provides will surely be helpful to develop the flexibility of our pe rspective and thinking. In fact, there are a number of assignments and I so metimes struggle, but I real ize that those works are rewarding and meaningful.

All academic fields of study are meaningful for us

Presentation by Poster Session(GL111)

Have you decided what you want to do in the future? I think some people still do not know what to do. Generally, people tend not to take classes that they think are not necessary for their future goals. I was also the person who thinks in this way. However, after entering GLAP, I realized that this idea was wrong. Although I enrolled here with a vision of my future plans to become a food business management planner and was thinking of taking business classes, I mostly took classes that had no relativity with business, including arts and design during my first year. These classes were very useful to me. Even though there is no direct relationship to my future plan, there is an “indirect” relationship such as broadening my perspective.

A Day on Campus

8:50 Tutorial2
In this course, students will read assigned books and give pres entation and discussions with a small group. We read four books in various fields in one year. When I have a presentation, I always check the points what I have to say.
11:00 Badminton
This is one of the few classes that I can interact with students from other faculties. In the class, we learn the basics to advanced skills of badminton through games and practices.
12:30 Lunch
I often have lunch with GLAP classmates at the canteen (cafeter ia) or restaurants nearby Rikkyo. It is very helpful to find out delicious restaurants in Ikebukuro.
13:00 Self Study
In the free time, I often check and do the assignments given in the classes with my colleagues. It depends on the next class, but mostly I am in the library or the global lounge.
15:30 Culture and Fine Arts
This lesson teaches the definition of 'Fine Arts' in a changing society. I enjoy taking this class but sometimes struggle because it requi res imagination, creativity and flexibility to grab the gist of the painters intention.
18:00 Club or Workout
I belong to a baseball club and practice every Wednesday and Friday at the baseball ground near Ikebukuro. There are a number of members from different faculty and grades, thus it is a good opportunity to interact with them. When there is no club activity, I go to the gym in Shinjuku.
21:00 Home
Before going to bed, I make it a habit to check the schedule fo r the next day and the task to be done.
