GLAP Students

Classes at GLAP

Most classes in GLAP are discussion-based and consist of 5 to 2 0 students. The classes are enjoyable because of the cozy atmosphere and because everyone respects each other. The professors know each of us well and listen carefully to what we say. A professor’s comment can be so fascinating, making me think about things I have not thought about before.

There no final exams in GLAP but instead there are presentations that we do in class. Ways to create Power Point presentations and resumes are taught to us, and I am grateful for the numerous opportunities given to me to present. It will help me in my future career. I am not good at memorizing many facts at once, so I appreciate that we are seen for our daily effort.

Liberal Arts

For me, to study liberal arts is to get a broad education by st udying multiple areas. For instance, by learning about portraits in the UK (Cul ture and Fine Arts), music in student movements (Political Sociology), and analyzing letters written by Napoleon (World History), I was able to see how there are connections everywhere, even in places that seems the opposite.

A liberal arts education will form me into a flexible thinker which will help me in the future. I believe when I face a challenge, I will be abl e to solve problems. Lastly, I love that the subjects I am learning about are around me or about the real world. It motivates me to study further.

Dorm life

Visiting Japanese garden and shrines with international students

By living with international students at the dorm, I had the ch ance to understand the values of people with different backgrounds. I enjoy moments when my dorm friends share candies from their original countries. At the dorm during dinner, my friends and I talk about simple topics such as how our day was to serious topics like international issues. Most international students stay for only about a year, so I miss my friends who have already gone back home. This dorm life has been a special experience for me as I get to feel like I am studying overseas while staying in Japan.

Class Schedule(Fall Semester of 1st year )

English Disucssion
In this class, I discuss in English on various t opics including education, society, and media. I have learned formal phrases that I usually would not use with my classmates. By repeating the phrases multiple times, I feel how they become a part of my vocabulary . In discussions, each of my opinions must have a reason. This class gave me opportunities to think about topics I have never thought about before, such as gender in Japan and crime and punishment. In this class, I had classmates who are from outside of GLAP and was able to be friends with them.
GL111
In GL111, a company asks our class to give proposals for their problem. The class separates into teams of 5. Each one thinks of what they believe is the best solution to the problem while learning about what it takes to be a leader. In this class, there are students from a vari ety of backgrounds incl uding international students and students from other departments. Each team does group assignments together, and sometimes our opinions clash. When that happens, we use the leadership skills taught in class and complete each task. At the end of the semester, there is an opportunity for the class to present the proposal to the companies. In this class, I learned how others see me and how I try to act when I face a challenge.
Health and Wellness
In this class, I learned about the wellness of hum ans. In the t wo hours of c lass every week, one class is held in the classroom where I learn about how to be healthy and do discussions. In the other half, I exercise. This class was different from wha t I did in high sc hool which were sports with balls or dance. In Health and Wellness, I do yoga, pilates, and circuit training. On the other day in class, I learned about “mindful eating” which means that I m ust slowly eat while concentrating on the five senses when eating. After I learned about this, the professor gave everyone in the class a small piece of chocolate. My classmates and I took 10 minutes eating the small piece … smelling it, touching it, even enjoying the sound of the wrapper! It was fun.
Culture and Fine Arts
In this class, I learned about art history and how art is connected to society. The professor emphasized the importance of “tradition” in the arts. My classmates and I thought about how the traditions of each country are influencing artworks in each country, and gave a presentation. I take this class with inter national students, so it is interesting for me to see how I can learn Danish art, a world I was not familiar with. Recently in class, a debate about whether a broken statue such as Venus de Milo has value. I knew this was a famous statue so I had only believed that it had value, but some classmates argued that the statue has no value. I was curious to hear their opinions and be a part of this active debate.
