GLAP Students

Campus Life of Students - Aim high in the future

Before entering Rikkyo University, there were many questions about the liberal arts. One of th e professors at GLAP explains GLAP learning e mbodies learning in liberal arts and I gradually deepened my understanding of liberal arts while studying GLAP. Usually one department offers courses on one specialized field, but GLAP offers “Liberal Arts” which includes seven fields of life sciences, physical sciences, social sciences, philosophy, history, and social science, as well as creative art (art, music, performing arts, literature). By reading related books in these fields and discussing, it helps t o expand our knowledge on seven areas. We can cultivate not only a wide range of knowledge but also multiple perspectives because we discuss and analyze an event from different viewpoints and themes. Furthermore, all classes are conducted in English so that we can deepen our international understandin g and improve English proficiency.

Dormitory Life

Currently, there is less interaction with international students in the dormitory due to COVID-19, but until the first year of university in 2019, there were many international students from various countries and able to communicate with them. By talking to international students on a variety of topics during mealtime or break time, I could feel cultural differences of eac h country and how the cultures I took for granted could be surprising or stra nge from their point of view. For example, a friend of international students sai d there are not many halal food restaurants in Japan. I have never thought about this while living in Japan, so it broadened my horizons. It was an opportunity to understand the difficulties of international students that we do not usually feel and to broaden my thoughts and think multiculturally.

Majoring in International Business, Future Plans After Graduation

At the Palace of Versailles with international students

Since I have always been interested in economic/business, I wou ld like to continue reading a lot of business-related books and studying business professionally.

I think studying international business field will be helpful even after graduating from university getting a job in future, so I chose Business field after returning Japan. I learned basics of economics through basic accounting, finance, and marketing in the international business field. I believe what I learned about international personnel management, multicultural business, and international relations will be valuable knowledge that can be used immediately in real business situations. No matter which department I am assigned to, I would like to make good use of this expertise and experience in the international business field. Based on the knowledge and experie nce I am currently learning, I plan to write my graduation thesis “ Research on the Korean Youth Stock Market Boom” .

Literature and Society

Literature and Society is one of the ELA classes, reading the literary works related to the four major themes and analyzing the relevance of each literary work to the theme. The four themes included socially relevant utopia, dystopia, return to nature, and escape from society and we analyzed how each literary work relates to society. Through this class, I was able to learn various literary works around the world from a sociological perspective. It was interesting to a nalyze t he his torical background and purpose of the author's writing while nalyzing various literary works from Nobel Prize in Literature to Plato and Hojo-ki.

Traditional Arts in Japan

In this Traditional Arts in Japan, we analyze and learn the history of Japanese art from the Asuka period to the Edo period art in Japan including Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism. Since it is often considered by the curator method, which is a profession that collects art materials, plans and manages exhibitions, I enjoyed analyzing and appreciating historical relics with my professor. For example, in Chinese art, it was fascinating to be able to listen to explanations while looking at the works with professors online at the British Museum site, and later discussing with others what works impressed them the most.

English Intensive C

We discuss a variety of themes in English Intensive C. I t was interesting to l earn English by dialogue with teachers and other students, rather than the traditional passive learning of English vocabulary and grammar. In addition, I was able to exchange various opinions and meet students from other departments as I could take classes with them. The themes of the classes were diverse, such as education, advertising, and work, so I was able to hear various opinions and thoughts. The professor was kind, so I was very satisfied with this class.

International Human Resource Management

This class is to learn the elements necessary for international human resource manage - ment. We learn a lot of things to consider when international companies hire people from different backgrounds or expand its branches around the world. I learned that the work values and definition can differ by culture, it is necessary to consider different values of human relationships when evaluate employees, which ultimately leads to a company's competitiveness. It was very meaningful to learn necessary specialized knowledge for international business and analyze the case studies of various companies doing business in Japan, Europe and the United States.
